Turmeric Essential Oil in history

Turmeric oil is extracted from turmeric. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Turmeric grows to a height of about 1 meter tall and has yellow flowers. The root is bright orange with a thin brownish skin. It is native to southern India and Indonesia; turmeric is cultivated on the mainland and islands on the Indian Ocean.

Turmeric essential oil is derived from the plant’s tuberous rhizomes or underground roots. The essential oil is typically obtained from the turmeric root through CO2 or steam distillation using the solvent hexane.

Turmeric Essential Oil uses

Turmeric benefits come from its health-promoting vitamins, phenols, and alkaloids. Turmeric oil is considered to be a strong relaxant and balancer to the body. Given all these beneficial components, turmeric essential oil has the following benefits:

1.      Prevention of Neurological Diseases

It has been shown through studies that turmerone, a major bioactive compound of turmeric oil, inhibits microglia activation. Microglia are a type of cell located throughout the brain and spinal cord. Microglia activation is a sign of brain disease. Turmeric essential oil contains a compound that stops this harmful cell activation, preventing and treating brain disease

Turmeric essential oil’s aromatic turmerone is believed to be a promising natural way to support the regeneration necessary to improve neurologic diseases like Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injury, and stroke.

2.      Curbing Hair Loss

Turmeric essential oil can be quite useful if you are suffering from hair loss caused by a fungal infection. The anti-fungal properties of turmeric oil can rid your scalp of the infection leading to the end of hair fall. Massaging your hair and scalp with turmeric oil can cure the fungal infection in a few weeks depending on the severity of the infection.

3.      Improves Skin Health

Turmeric oil is good for the face. It is wildly used for skin lightening since applying turmeric topically has been shown to decrease hyperpigmentation as well as fine lines and wrinkles. As mentioned earlier, its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties can be a useful natural acne treatment. Caution: Use it on your skin in small diluted amounts to avoid yellowing your skin.

4.      Relieves Depression and Anxiety

Turmeric essential oil is regarded as a strong relaxant and balancer. It can soothe the mind and uplift the mood with its warm, woody, earthy, and spicy scent. This in turn will promote positive emotions and increase energy for productivity.

5.      Cold and Congestion Prevention

A recent article documented that the active compound in turmeric, curcumin, was found to suppress viruses including hepatitis, herpes, chikungunya, and influenza-A, HIV, and HPV.

The article has cited several studies backed by strong research proving turmeric’s role in impairing viruses from multiplying, shielding the body from spreading the infection to other cells. Turmeric essential oil contains powerful healing properties to combat the symptoms of colds, coughs, and flu.

6.      Improving Heart Health

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 million lives each year. CVDs are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, and other conditions. With fatalities on the rise, it’s important to look for natural cures that can support heart health. Curcumin found in turmeric essential oil is one of the best natural remedies to promote cardiovascular health and lower cholesterol.

There are research studies that show how curcumin supports heart health. A 2009 study documenting the benefits of curcumin states that “modern scientific research has demonstrated its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-thrombotic, and cardiovascular protective effects,” and reports that curcumin may reverse several factors that cause heart problems.

Curcumin has been observed to detoxify the liver preventing the production of cholesterol. It also improves the lining of blood vessels or the endothelium. Its powerful antioxidants prevent free radicals from destroying blood vessels and restrict plaque from adhering to blood vessel walls. Damaged and plaque-lined blood vessels impede blood flow causing the two biggest killers – heart attack and stroke.

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefit of curcumin in turmeric essential oil helps lower blood pressure, promote the growth of red blood cells, and protect against fatigue, anemia, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
