Its aroma is fresh, evergreen and slightly balsamic, and the oil presents as a clear, colorless liquid with a strong middle fragrance note. Steam distilled from the needles of the species abies (alba or balsamea), it is a type of pine tree widely grown in the northern hemisphere. Fir needle essential oil from Canada is considered one of the highest quality available. The fir tree is probably best known as a Christmas tree, as it was the first species widely used to represent the holiday. The main origins of fir needle essential oil, besides Canada, are the densely-forested areas of France, Germany, and Bulgaria. Native Americans used fir needles in their pillows to promote a peaceful sleep, and after childbirth, it was burned to stimulate perspiration and help women to recover their strength more quickly. Most fir needle essential oil is derived from silver fir or balsam fir varieties, but be aware that if the source is anything but the species abies, it is not a true fir. Fir needle essential oil decreases the amount of bacteria in the body and on surfaces. This mechanism also makes it helpful in combatting body odor.
