Oil Summary: Galbanum oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Galbanum plant. First the resin is obtained from the stems of the plant, then it is steam distilled to produce the essential oil. These plants were native to ancient Persia; present day Iran. Galbanum, in general, has been used since biblical times and is even mentioned in the Bible. Ancient civilizations, from the Egyptians to the Persians, used it commonly as incense in their holy temples. The incense created an aura of healing and warded off infection. Soon, the resin from Galbanum plants was considered to have medicinal properties and the rest is history! Today, there is a long list of medicinal benefits to Galbanum oil. It is also used in aromatherapy to bring about calmness and increase relaxation during meditation. The fresh, woody and earthy aroma of the oil bring pleasure to both mind and soul. In aromatherapy, Galbanum is used to help treat trauma, shock, stress, and depression. Galbanum oil use in aromatherapy began in ancient Mesopotamia and steadily spread across Middle-East Asia, South-East Europe, and Northern Africa. Ancient populations highly regarded the plant. The Egyptians used the oil for their religious ceremonies as well as embalming. In classical Ayurvedic Medicine, it was considered to exert a balancing action on all the three doshas: Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. A top note in perfumery, Galbanum is a great addition to blends that are intended for meditation. When used in moderation, Galbanum is a versatile oil that blends with many other essential oils, including those within the resin, earth, citrus, herbaceous, and wood categories.
