Description

Oil Summary: Nutmeg Essential Oil has a spicy-sweet distinct and robust aroma with woody undertones. A little can go a long way as a culinary spice and for aromatherapy purposes. Research suggests that nutmeg essential oil has various health benefits attributed to its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, sedative, and antioxidant properties. Therefore, it is not only used to treat muscle aches and pains, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory infections, but it is also used for skin care and as an ingredient in perfumes, soaps, and in some dental care and oral products. Nutmeg essential oil is derived from the seeds of the Nutmeg plant through steam distillation. Nutmeg, scientifically called Myristica fragrans, is a tropical evergreen tree native to the South Pacific, more specifically Indonesia. It grows up to 15 meters, producing dull yellow flowers and dark green leaves.

Botanical Name: Myristica Fagrans

Plant Origin: Indonesia

Processing Method: Steam distillation

Plant Part: extracted from the seeds

Odor and Color: smells like a rich, warm, slightly sweet spice; Colorless to pale yellow liquid

Blends well with: lavender, rosemary, orange, black pepper, clary sage, eucalyptus, ginger, and ylang-ylang oils.

Contraindication: Avoid using it around sensitive areas like the ears, eyes, or inner nose. Aromatherapists recommend a patch test before using the oil on the skin. The myristicin in nutmeg is known for its mind-altering effects. Therefore, if ingested in large doses, nutmeg oil can cause hallucinogenic effects similar to LSD. Pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid using nutmeg in any form before consulting their doctor. Large quantities of nutmeg can promote the production of prostaglandin, a hormone associated with childbirth, and trigger a miscarriage. Keep out of reach of children, especially those under the age of 12, as the ingestion of large amounts by a child may result in nutmeg poisoning. If you are under any medication or have underlying medical conditions like cancer or epilepsy, seek medical advice from a certified medical practitioner before use. Finally, use and store your nutmeg carefully if you have a pet. The oil’s sweet-spicy scent may be appealing to your pet, but it can poison them if they consume it in large quantities.
