Description

Oil Summary: Tangerine oil is produced by expression of the fresh peel of the fruit of Citrus reticulata blanco. Tangerines are almost identical to mandarin oranges, with the exception that it is has a deeper orange color, lacks pips, and is harvested in a different time of the year than mandarin oranges. The health benefits of Tangerine Essential Oil can be attributed to its properties as an antiseptic, antispasmodic, cytophylactic, depurative, sedative, stomachic and tonic substance. Tangerine essential oil has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries, and is known for its uplifting scent, its cleansing properties and its sweet flavor. In aromatherapy, it is known best for its ability to lighten the mood and support a feeling of happy optimism. It is grown in temperate and tropical regions all over the world, including the southern United States to a great degree. Tangerine and Mandarin essential oils are often interchangeable; the species of citrus itself (citrus reticulata) is identical in DNA, though there are some variations in appearance and time of harvest that provide a differentiation. Tangerine essential oil is cold-pressed from the outer rind of the citrus fruit, and presents as a yellow-amber clear liquid with a fresh top fragrance note. Its chemical components are methylanthranilate, limonene, geraniol, citrol, and citronellol, its aromas sweet, warm, lemony, orangey, and floral.

Odor and Appearance: A reddish orange to brownish orange liquid with a pleasant, orange like odor.

Country of origin: USA

Botanical Name: Citrus reticulata

Contraindication: Though tangerine essential oil is generally considered mild and safe to use for most people, it is not recommended for use on pets as its safety in veterinary medicine has not been established. Some citrus oils can be toxic to cats, especially. Always consult your veterinarian before exposing your pet to essential oils. Most citrus oils are phototoxic. Though tangerine oil is considered a very low risk, it is advisable to avoid sun exposure while using topically. Always heed recommended dilution ratios and test on a small area of skin until you know your tolerance. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Undiluted ingestion of essential oils can be harmful. Do not ingest undiluted essential oil unless under the direct guidance of a practitioner who is qualified to practice aromatherapy.
